Laser line and groove grooving is a new laser processing technique, which makes it possible to produce a high-density reflection microgroove array. We have investigated the evolution of the laser-induced damage at the surface of an aluminum plate, as a function of pulse energy. Two microgroove arrangements were tested: the first consisted of a linear array of parallel grooves at a constant depth and the second was composed of a series of groove segments of two different depths. The reflectance profiles of the laser-scanned surface at increasing pulse energies were measured by an optical microscope. Using this technique, it was possible to monitor the onset of surface damage. After exposure of the surface to high pulse energies, two distinct stages were observed. The first is characterized by a strong increase in the reflectance of the central zone of the microgroove, indicating the start of surface damage. The second stage is defined by a transition from a reflectance peak to a minimum, the position of which is a good indicator of surface damage. This was due to the formation of surface craters that grew to the extent that they became visible to the naked eye.
